Knowledge Management Advisor

The Knowledge Management Advisor is primarily focused on building internal systems, tools and processes for the collaboration of the Disaster Management (DM) Community of Practice (COP) and the use of those tools and processes to improve our DM work.

Specific responsibilities will include the management of online platforms such as WV Central and others to improve access to information across the community, the quality of that information and the signposting of information. Learning will be supported through existing learning processes and the development of other engaging methods. The position will also support use of tools and processes by the entire COP and help bridge the gap between two dimensional documents and information resources and their active use for improvement in practice.


  • Establish a new Disaster Management approach consisting of merged HEA and FPMG COPs and manage it so as to achieve -wide alignment with the new Disaster Management strategic frame.

  • Build a learning strategy that reinforces the direction outlined in the new DM strategic frame and seeks to build a body of best practice knowledge in order to highlight areas where we could improve our policy and practice.

  • Build the capability of the organization in disaster management through the development and maintenance of resources needed by the COP for their learning, capability development and more effective implementation.

  • Provide input and contribute to the Capabilities and Effectiveness team objectives.



  • Has a degree or equivalent in social sciences or related field.

  • Knowledge of the content and application of key international standards relating to emergency work.

  • Strong understanding of online collaboration platforms and familiarity with WV Central.

  • Analytical and strong writing capabilities, ideally with experience in qualitative data collection and analysis.

  • Strong project management skills with the demonstrated ability to make logical connections across projects and plan from a user’s/client’s perspective.

  • Ability to create visual presentations, documents and online sites which engage users using adult learning principles.

  • At least five years experience in the development/humanitarian sector, ideally with field application/experience.

  • Demonstrated proactivity in the development and conclusion of a project with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Ability to prioritize among multiple work tasks and with multiple stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to undertake meta-analyses of secondary data and develop a concise accessible learning report.

  • Demonstrated experience working across a complex and large organization to achieve work objectives.

  • Excellent communication skills including online facilitation, training and influencing.


  • Understanding of WV’s disaster management and food assistance standards, processes and protocols.

  • Experience in qualitative data collection and analysis.

  • Field experience in a humanitarian context.

  • Excellent networking and influencing skills.

  • Ability to work successfully with multiple stakeholders and objectives.

Work Environment:

  • The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally 20% of the time
