The purpose of this position is to work with the VisionFund International (VFI) Director of Credit Risk to drive the implementation of the VFI credit risk framework, building credit maturity in MFIs for credit approvals and credit risk oversight. The position links all elements of credit products, credit manuals, concentration limits and risk oversight, with the documentation, approval, and knowledge management, focusing on two out of the four regions in the VFI Network. The position will also conduct credit analytics in the regions, to identify risks in loan origination and work with the regions and MicroFinance Institution (MFI) Risk personnel to address the risks. The Deputy Director of Credit Risk is pivotal to the aim of building credit maturity in MFIs because s/he will need the skills to review, revise and align to VFI’s Global Credit Policy the credit procedures and policies of MFIs and give advice to MFI senior leadership, and regional teams. A mistake in this regard will cost VFI enormously. There is therefore significant financial responsibility, being responsible for decisions affecting approximately half of VFI’s global portfolio.



  • Approve MFI credit policies, products, aligned to the VFI Network Credit Policy, new product rollouts, pricing, concentration limits, within the authorities established in the VFI Credit Risk Management Structure.

  • Implement the VFI Network Credit Policy throughout the portfolio MFIs, working closely with the Regional Teams.

  • For MFIs without an approved credit manual and/or product inventory, overhaul and realign MFI Credit Policies with the aim of all MFIs having an approved credit manual aligned to the minimum standards.

  • Maintain VFI central repository of approved credit policies, products, exemptions, concentrations, products and change tracking.


  • Train MFIs in portfolio countries on the VFI business process for credit approvals and ensure compliance with standards.

  • Build the capacity and credit maturity of portfolio MFIs and identify potential staff for certification as MFI Credit Risk, Policy and Products committee members.

  • Train MFIs in the level of authority they have according to the VFI Credit Risk Management Structure.

  • Train MFIs in how to initiate changes, and prepare monthly credit reports.

  • Recommend portfolio classification in MFIs under responsibility, and identify triggers for promotion and demotion between levels.


  • Analyse and report on key credit risks in portfolio countries and engage regional teams and MFIs in the analysis and interpretation.

  • Support the Director of Credit Risk in data analysis, data cleaning and report preparation for VFI Credit Risk reports.

  • Train personnel in MFIs and regions to analyse and interpret the data.

  • Identify and escalate breaches to approved limits.


  • 10 years’ experience in microfinance or financial services.

  • 5 years’ experience in regional and/or global roles in microfinance which have included responsibilities in credit policy, products and processes.

  • 2 years technical experience in MFI internal controls, policies and credit products and processes.

  • University degree, preferably in banking or business administration.

  • Excellent skills in excel.

  • Computer literacy and ability to analyse microfinance data.

  • Effective in written and verbal communication in English.


  • Spanish and / or French language skills.

  • Master’s degree, preferably in banking or business administration.

  • Experience in Credit Risk oversight and reporting.

  • Experience as microfinance practitioner / manager, and track record in producing good credit performance.

  • Experience in the broader Risks MFIs face.

  • Experience working closely with MFIs in different regions and contexts.

Work Environment/Travel:

  • The position requires ability and willingness to travel internationally 25% - 30% of the time.
