Area Manager - Syria Response


*Position is contingent upon funding and donor approval.


Under the supervision of the Head of Operations, the Area Manager is responsible for overseeing the establishment of WV’s humanitarian operations in Syria, with a focus on startup, initial implementation, strategic planning, quality and design, risk-sensitive operations, strategic partnerships, staff management, grants acquisition and operational security for the initiation of World Vison’s programmes


The Area Manager will play an integral role in the establishment of specific World Vision programmes in Syria. S/he is an innovative leader with the capacity to oversee, direct, strategise, plan and implement a multi-sector response in Syria – considering potential PHC, WASH, protection, and livelihoods interventions, both through direct implementing modalities, and with partners.


  • Higher degree in International Development or other relevant area.

  • 8+ years proven experience with International NGOs, donor or UN agencies in emergency relief/ development programming and operations.

  • Fluent in English (written and oral).


  • Knowledge of computer software such as MS Office and email programmes.

  • Concrete practical hands on experience in remote management aid delivery contexts.

  • Strong knowledge of key sectoral areas, including programmatic approaches to health and protection programming.

  • Experienced and confident in external representation with donors and within formal and informal coordination structures, including within the Whole of Syria coordination structure.

  • Highly developed communication skills (oral and written) with ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and persuasively with senior internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated success as a collaborator and team builder committed to the transfer of knowledge.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.

  • Innovator and calculated risk taker.

  • Understands, values and promotes diversity to achieve organizational goals.

  • Experience designing and implementing programmes in Syria, through partners, highly preferred.

  • Full adherence to World Vision Child Protection, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies.

  • Experience establishing, designing and implementing cross-border programmes, through partners, highly preferred.

  • Basic understanding of Arabic (preferred).

Work Environment/Travel:

  • Position requires willingness and ability to continue to function in unpredictable and potentially hostile environments.

  • Irregular travel anticipated.
