Syria Communications Advisor


Position Title: Syria Communications Advisor 



To oversee and lead the communications department of World Vision Syria. Key areas of work are 1) to increase public engagement on WV Syria programming and its impact on children, by remotely sourcing content from our partners inside Syria, to be edited, packaged and shared with comms, advocacy and support offices around the WV Partnership. And 2) to develop and implement an internal communications strategy for the Syria Country Office to promote better messaging across teams. Finally, to meet response and partnership communications requirements as outlined in the Response External Relations strategy.

Major Responsibilities:


Resource Production and Publication

  1. Lead development of strategic planning in resource production and publication.

  2. Source, research, write and share stories about successes and needs in World Vision Syria projects.

  3. Source content, including photos and videos, from our partners inside Syria. Caption, upload, share and publish as appropriate.

  4. Regularly pitch story, photo and other resource ideas through the Share Web site.

  5. Advise partners working in Syria on how to gather the best content possible to meet our donor and comms needs.

  6. Ensure all written, photographic, video, web and other resources produced are carried out in alignment with World Vision child protection standards.

  7. Support in WV’s compliance with global branding and corporate identity.

  8. Work closely with advocacy to produce situational documents to be shared with relevant parties

Media Relations and Risk

  1. Lead media relations for WVI Syria, including:

  2. Monitor news media coverage of World Vision International and humanitarian issues regarding the Syria Crisis.

  3. Identify and help respond to any reputation risk issues.

  4. Gather information from relevant staff on operations in crisis to develop into content for internal and external use.

  5. Support translation of key documents including press release and speeches to provide information to the local media (if appropriate).

  6. Provide social media content to the partnership as required.

  7. Risk is reported as per WV global protocols and channels.

Lead Syria Response-internal communication

  1. Develop and roll out internal communications plan that highlights the number of different outputs that promote staff engagement and transperancy.

  2. Produce media messaging guidelines around risk-prone events happening inside Syria.

  3. Communicate internally to WV staff on key events in collaboration with SMT.

  4. Communicate externally to WV support offices and MEERO on key events in collaboration with SMT.

Brand protection

Support in monitoring and signing-off on publications and other materials produces containing the World Vision logo to ensure consistency with WVI corporate branding guidelines.

Education: Degree in Journalism or Communication, development communication, social sciences or other related fields


Experience: At least 5 years experience in communications

At least 1 year of experience in doing communications and media work, preferably with an NGO;


Knowledge & Skills:


  • Excellent creative, organizational and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to work within and across teams and with all levels of staff and stakeholders; resourceful and innovative;

  • Experience leading processes and communicating complex ideas to management.

  • Proficiency in the use of technology and software (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Professional, Google Products);

  • Basic photography skills (able to compose a shot, interest in developing photography skills);

  • Fluent in spoken and written Arabic and English.

  • Willingness to participate in capacity building initiatives, and implement learnings on-the-job

  • Willingness to assume duties and responsibilities in all communications areas, as needed;

  • Pro-active and able to multi-task

  • Proven trach record of initiative and innovation.

  • Proven ability to design effective communication products, lead formulation of communication messages and strategies;

  • Knowledge of technical aspects involved in the production of different public information and education materials;

  • Multimedia skills such as video production, photo management and graphic design

  • Experience or knowledge of copywriting and copyediting
