COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The purpose of this position is to implement communications and media strategy. The role is responsible for world vision branding visibility and reputation at the Zonal level.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

REPUTATION & INFLUENCE

  • Contribute child focused news, features, press releases, photos and videos about World Vision Malawis key activities to media

  • Contribute towards development and execution of media crisis plan and respond proactively to all potential reputation risks and media crises

  • Contribute stories for print and electronic media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Radio, Newspapers)

  • Monitor WVM visibility and reputation in print and electronic media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Radio, Newspapers)

  • Increased positive coverage of World Vision Malawis work in local and national media outlets

  • All media articles (print and electronic) highlighting World Vision Malawis work are archived and shared with National Office

  • Social media content and engagement plan for the zone in place.

ADVOCACY

  • To support in developing, implementing and reporting on advocacy plans and initiatives in the zone

  • To lead in establishing strategic partnerships with the media for advocacy in the zone

  • Lead in the production of materials for advocacy

  • Advocacy plans with clear communication strategy being implemented

  • Key advocacy materials are developed and shared internally as well as externally.

  • Strong support of the Media in World Vision Malawi advocacy campaigns.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION

  • Support in developing annual communication plans

  • Develop communication resources for internal and external information and marketing

  • Promote publicity of relevant national and international commemorative events and campaigns

  • Provide technical support during partner groups and media visits to APs

  • Monitor and support adherence to media regulatory frameworks and WVM media guidelines

  • Pitch content in relevant media platforms

  • Communication plan produced and shared

  • Quality communication products produced and distributed (stories, videos and photos) in line with national office strategic priorities and World Vision brand and identity standards.

  • Content showing WVM work in the Zone pitched in relevant media and other platforms (newspaper features, supplements and regional/partnership newsletters)

  • Rapid and slow onset disaster response communication resources produced and pitched in relevant platforms

  • Content from the zone shared in internal communication platforms

CAPACITY BUILDING

  • Facilitate training of staff in the zone on media handling (interviews etc)

  • To provide guidance to staff on media engagement, policies and protocols

  • Train front line staff in basic story writing, photography and videography

  • Build the capacity of staff, community stakeholders and children in Communications for Development (C4D)

  • Zonal staff able to handle interviews and articulate World Vision issues to the media

  • Frontline staff capturing and sharing quality stories, photos and videos

  • Children and community members capturing and sharing content that amplify their voices

REPORTING

  • Produce and share progress reports for the zone

  • Support reporting on Sponsorship 2.0 initiatives

  • Monthly, Quarterly and annual reports produced and shared.

  • Quality Sponsorship 2.0 initiatives products produced and shared (videos, stories etc)

Minimum qualification and experience required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications/Journalism from a recognized university.

  • 3-5 years’ experience working in the field of journalism or development communication

  • Conversant with international NGO business including programming, advocacy and humanitarian emergency sectors

  • Possess strong story writing, photography and videography skills

  • Willingness to work long hours when required

  • Self-motivated, innovative, and able to work under pressure

  • Strong drafting and analytical skills
