Grant Accountant

Job Description

Grant Accountant - Tenable in Mangochi

Purpose of the position:

The Grant Accountant is responsible for the financial management of the grant funds from start-up through close-out. S/he ensures proper financial management, accountability, planning, and reporting in alignment with the goals of the grant agreement and World Vision financial procedures and regulations. The accountant ensures that national legislation is adhered to, and that the country specific standards are applied in ensuring efficient use of resources.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Implement financial policies in accordance with World Vision Field Financial Manual, [Grant Agreement] Rules and Regulations and local financial regulations; assure that all grant policies and regulations are adhered to in the charging of cost.

  2. Consult Project Manager on cost allocations, general accounting, internal controls and administrative systems as required.

  3. Support project manager in identification and formulation of budget change requests (addenda/waiver/cost or no-cost extensions)

  4. Review and/or generate financial reports with use of donor templates for compliance with grant and donor requirements. Prepare close-out documentation at end of funding cycles in compliance with government regulations.

  5. Develop financial management mechanisms that minimize financial risk and maintain internal financial control safeguards/mechanisms and coordinate all audit activities

  6. Support project team with financial requests, reconciliation and safeguarding of resources in line with WVM policies..

  7. Assure that cash transactions are well planned, controlled and reported

  8. Analyze spending trends and provide feedback and analysis to team leaders and field colleagues on areas with significant over- or under spending.

  9. Liaise with appropriate partner offices regarding financial and accounting issues, escalate issues as per FFM escalation policy

Any other related duties as designated by Project Manager

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or international business management

  • Excellent command of Excel

  • Familiarity with the aid system, and understanding of donor and governmental requirements;

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken

  • Must be able to work with multiple deadlines and high demands

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with absolute discretion

  • 3+ years of solid experience in financial management and monitoring systems, preferably of large development programs, possibly complemented by academic expertise;

  • Excellent communication and drafting skills for effective reporting on programme financial performance;

  • Ability to monitor and evaluate financial and monitoring skills of communities through capacity-building efforts;

  • Ability to operate in a cross-cultural environment requiring flexibility.

  • Must be a committed Christian, able to stand above denominational diversities.

  • Post graduate degree related financial management or accounting

  • Excellent command of SunSystem

  • 5 years programme coordination experience in multi-sectoral programmes with INGOs or NGOs

  • Experience in organizational capacity building for non-profit organizations or coaching government

  • Excellent financial and analytical skills;
