Nutrition Officer - Puntland

Job Description

Purpose of the position:

To provide effective implementation, coordination and supervision of nutrition interventions with the aim of improving the nutritional status of vulnerable groups in Puntland, including managing day to day activities, documentation, monitoring and evaluation. Work closely with the Project Manager and Project Coordinator – Health and Nutrition and acting when she/he is not on the ground. Provide training support to integrated Primary Health Care and other program activities (TB, Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health, Nutrition etc) in Puntland. Provide timely response in cases of emergency.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Ensure effective implementation and coordination of project

  • Ensure that nutrition activities for OTP, SFP, pregnant and lactating are implementation according to work plans

  • Ensure that those admitted in the program are immunized according to the MOH approved schedule

  • Ensure supplies are delivered to the project facilities

  • Ensure nutrition guidelines are maintained in all MCH/OPD clinics and outreach stations

  • Provide supervision of MCH staff using the MCH supervision check list

  • Ensure children with medical complications are referred to the stabilization centre

2. Effective management of malnourished children on

  • Mobilize community for identification of malnourished children

  • Train staff to take measurements are taken accurately

  • Distribute IMAM guidelines to all MCHs and outreach stations

  • Ensure required adequate stock of plumpynut, medicines, micro nutrients and other supplies for management of malnourished are delivered to MCHs on timely basis

3. To oversee community mobilization and sensitization on PHC issues

  • Maintain participate in stakeholder networks

  • In consultation with the Nutrition Manager & Health coordinator, make contribution for opportunities for new projects

  • Ensure that the District Health Boards and Village Health Committees are constituted, trained and are “Active”

4. Represent WVS in the various forums such as meetings with the government, INGO, LNGO and government

  • Represent WV in coordination meetings as required

  • Maintain participate in stakeholder networks

5. Capacity building of personnel implementing nutrition interventions and human resource development

  • Conduct training needs assessment for nutrition staff

  • Participate in implementation of project staff training according to work plans

  • Conduct training for project staff, including community based staff

  • Compile comprehensive training reports

6. Finance and assets management, budget control and monitoring

  • Prepare business advance documents required to facilitate training and relevant payments

  • Ensure that business advances are accounted for within 3 days after training in completed

  • Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as negotiation skills

  • Must adhere to set security standards

  • Ensure a gender perspective in the scope of work

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training:


  • Relevant experience and ability to manage programs in insecure environments

  • Experience of working with and/ or commitment to humanitarian standards eg SPHERE

  • Educational level required: Degree in Public Health or related field with at least 1 to 3 years’ experience related to nutrition and health programing.

  • Technical Training qualifications required: Nurse / midwife or Medical Science / Public Health
