Project Assistant - Health & Nutrition

Job Description


In collaboration with the Project Officer implement the outlined Primary Health Care interventions within the assigned geographical area, participate in the provision of preventive and curative care for mothers, children and adults. Ensure the implementation of primary health care activities in the communities through training, supervision and collaboration with the community health /nutrition volunteers


  • Assist the Project Officer/Project Manager in planning, implementation, supervision and evaluation of Primary Health Care and nutrition activities in of the assigned geographical area.

  • Facilitate formation, training and supervision operations of Village Health committees/CHWs/CNWs

  • Work closely with the nutrition partners to oversee beneficiary screening , registration , nutrition treatment and follow up

  • Provide Clinical consultation and treatment following establishment protocols and standards.

  • Provide continuous on the job training and supervision and monitoring for the Community health workers, community nutrition workers, Village health committees and traditional birth attendants.

  • Participate in the preparation of the annual, quarterly and weekly work plans and reports in timely manner.

  • Collect compile and analyse monthly health and nutrition reports in timely manner. Including development of commodity distribution plan, health and nutrition surveillance data.

  • Keep adequate control of all assets, material and equipment being used at the facilities, ensuring timely replenishment when necessary

  • Support community health workers, community nutrition workers and nutrition staff adhere to treatment protocols and SOPs.

  • Promote a culture of compliance to policies are followed during all stages of project implemented.

  • Serve as technical resource person for all community health volunteers.

  • Ensure the proper immunizations schedule is followed by women and children and where necessary, administer vaccines.

  • Accept referrals from the villages when problems are beyond the skill of the CHWs and auxiliary staff.

  • Undertake beneficiary home visits for project monitoring and evaluations.

  • Ensure that proper hygiene, sanitary, and sterilization procedures are followed with in their work area.

  • Report disease outbreaks and sudden change in disease pattern to the Project Officer /Project Manager and follow up action points.

  • Assist in surveys and research studies of prevalent diseases.

  • Participate in weekly and monthly coordination meetings and ensure to provide weekly health cluster report from the facilities.

  • Attend staff meetings, in-service training and continuing education programs as required.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned from time to time by the supervisor


The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training:

  • Diploma in Nursing or Public health with at least 3 years working experience in a busy public health intervention area in Somalia

  • Two years’ experience implementing CIMAM program in Somalia, managing TSFP/OTP a plus.

  • Familiarity with Gedo health & nutrition and Jubaland MOH operations an added advantage

  • Good computer skills MS Word, MS Excel ,Ms Power point

  • Good command of English; written and Spoken

Working Environment / Conditions:

  • Work environment: Field Based in Luuq, South Central.

  • Travel: Considerable amount of travel is required.

  • The position will require significant amounts of time in the field (out of office) supporting the project teams.
