WASH Assistant I - Luuq

Job Description

Purpose of the position:

To provide continuous promotion of hygiene and sanitation standards through campaigns, meetings and community mobilization.

Major Responsibilities:(please define in output format – 1-10 things of what you expect to see as a resultof this position)

  1. Ensure maintained hygiene and sanitation standards among the community

  2. Coordinate timely and recommended gender representation in water management committee

  3. Enhance advocacy for water and sanitation issues

  4. Prepare work plans, accurate reports and collect information

Key Outputs/Responsibilities (Accountabilities and results)

Ensure well maintained hygiene and sanitation standards among the community

  • Supervise and monitor hygiene activities and follow up with hygiene mobilizers’ on any updates

  • Ensure the hygiene education and campaigns are conducted among the targeted community members.

  • Train the community on personal hygiene education through PHAST methodology

  • Educate the community on clean house hold water acquisition, transportation and storage.

  • Educate the community on solid waste management

  • Organize and develop beneficiary lists for distribution of sanitation material/ facilities such as soap and aqua tabs and ensuring equitable distribution of the same within the project area.

Ensure a timely and gender sensitive representation in water management committee

  • Enlighten the community on the need for gender balance in Water management committees

  • Ensure that the community especially women have developed interests in management of water facilities

  • Ensure at least 40 % membership of every active water Management committee are women

Enhance advocacy for water and sanitation issues

  • Use lessons learnt in hygiene promotion and spear head changes in the organization and state ministry

Prepare work plans, collect information and submit accurate reports

  • Prepare weekly work plans and submit to the supervisor

  • Prepare weekly activity achievement reports

  • Liaise with all stake holders in conducting periodic assessment and baseline studies

  • Highlight the challenges faced and way forward

  • Capture hygiene education lessons learnt and share them.

  • Ensure a gender perspective in the scope of work

Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training:

  • Educational level required: Diploma in any of the following - Community Development, Public Health

  • Technical Training qualifications required: Skills in Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS,) Child Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (CHAST) and/ or Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Methodology (PHAST) tools.

  • Experience: 2 yearsof experience in Project implementation of preferably a Community development / health or / WASH Project.


  • Proficiency in using computer software e. g MS office and internet.

  • Fluency in Somali language and English is needed

Working Environment / Conditions:

  • Work environment: Field –based (Luuq)

  • Travel: 100% Domestic travel is required.
