Senior Nursing Officer, Kuajok Hospital

Job Description


To head the nursing service and ensure provision of quality nursing care to patients in the in-patient and outpatient departments, with focus on Maternal and Child health. Ensure successful implementation of the nursing component of the HPF project as per the Work plan and other project documents. Supervise day- to- day activities of nurses in wards supported by World Vision South Sudan. Build capacity of national health workers (nurses) and technically mentor them in the provision of quality nursing care.

Take a lead role in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care in the wards/units in line with the ministry of health standards.


  • Provide leadership for the Nursing and Midwifery team in the Hospital;

  • Organize and manage provision of quality nursing care with focus on Maternal and Child health in the wards.

  • Ensuring that patients are treated with respect and dignity at all times.

  • Promote practices that are sensitive to the needs of patients/clients from multi-cultural backgrounds.

  • Supervise nurses and other staff in the wards/units, and assess their training needs in order to upgrade their skills.

  • Ensure safety of patients admitted in the wards.

  • Investigate incidents related to patients’ care, dignity and safety.

  • Ensure maintenance of a safe and therapeutic environment for patient care within the wards/units.

  • Ensure maintenance of inventory of specialized items and ensure items are available at all times.

  • Ensure proper documentation on nursing /midwifery care activities in the wards/units.

  • Ensure that the planning, delivery and evaluation of care programmes address the changing needs of patients in the wards/units.

  • Ensure the availability of the right skill mix for the delivery of Nursing care during every shift.

  • Ensure universal precaution measures are in place as per WHO and Ministry of health standards.

  • Promote the right of both patients and nurses in the wards/units.

  • Protect all confidential information concerning patients obtained in the course of professional practice and make disclosures only with the patient’s consent or when disclosure can be appropriately justified.

  • Ensure regular availability of supplies and other logistics in the wards/units.

  • Coordinate and supervise roster planning and monitoring and documentation of al leave for the midwifery staff in the wards/units.

  • Plan and budget for nursing/ midwifery care activities for the wards/units.

  • Prepare and submit regular reports on midwifery activities in the wards/units.

  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation on nursing/ midwifery care activities in the wards/units.

  • Promote a positive image for the ward/unit.

  • Devise improved job methods for increasing efficiency in the ward/unit.

  • Participate in the development of quality assurance systems for monitoring quality and for investigating incidents and complaints in the ward/unit.

  • Ensure that nurses in the ward/unit comply with quality assurance guidelines.

  • Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of nurses / midwifery practice in the hospital.

  • Keep up-to-date with quality developments relevant to area of work and related services and ensure their dissemination to staff.

  • Ensure documentation of success stories.

  • Identify and investigate poor quality promptly, identifying contributing factors and agreeing on methods for addressing them.

  • Be actively involved in clinical supervision and peer review.

  • Be actively involved in reports writing.


  • Degree in Nursing from a recognized and reputable university/ college. Plus, a Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery.

  • Certificate in EMNOC. TOT in EMNoC certificate will be a plus.

  • Registered nurse/ midwife with proven record of having worked in the maternity ward and pediatric ward as a nurse and a sister in charge for at least four years in a hospital.

  • At least 3 years of work as senior nursing officer or principal nursing officer.

  • Understanding of project management and monitoring.

  • Excellent reporting and writing skills.

Working Environment / Conditions:

  • Work environment: Fields-Based position.

  • Travel: 30% domestic/international travels is required.

  • On call: Available for any communications.
