WASH Officer Upper Nile

Job Description

Title: WASH Officer

Region: Upper Nile

Station: Malakal

Division: Emergency Response

Reports To: Project Manager


The WASH Officer will assist the Project Manager in the implementation of WASH activities in the UNICEF funded Life-saving emergency WASH response for IDP communities in Upper Nile. This will be achieved by working with the Project Manager in assessments, installation, construction, rehabilitation of WASH facilities, monitoring and Evaluation and capacity building of staff and community structures. This project targets IDPS and Vulnerable hosts in Malakal County, and any other approved areas of Upper Nile States.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Develop design plans, working drawings, technical specifications, bill of quantities as per approved standards by WASH cluster or any other institution as required for all construction works outlined on the project design for the said project using AutoCAD or similar drafting computer software;

  2. Install, maintain and operate surface water treatment systems (SWATs) or any water purification / filtering equipment.

  3. Maintain good records for water treatment scheme consumables (reagents and diesel)

  4. Formation and training of functional water management committees at specific water points.

  5. Plan and supervise the training of community hygiene promoters on appropriate hygiene promotion methods.

  6. Oversee community promotion of hygiene through awareness raising by community hygiene promoters and that households adopt high standards of solid waste disposal.

  7. Ensure timely request for water scheme consumables to WVI and or cluster core pipeline supplies or the water treatment support agency.

  8. Ensure quality and timely treatment of water for distribution and ensure timely servicing of equipment in the water supply establishments so as to maintain reliable water distribution.

  9. Keep constant surveillance of water treatment process and records and undertake water quality (microbial, chemical and physical) analysis for all water sources using portable water analysis kit.

  10. Liaise with local authorities and community leaders on the day to day running of the water scheme

  11. Ensure timely submission of water treatment, operation and maintenance reports biweekly and monthly.

Key Qualifications and Competencies

  1. At least a Diploma in Civil Engineering or related field. A bachelor’s degree will be an added advantage

  2. Minimum 4 years’ experience in Water and/or Sanitation Project implementation, two of which must be with an INGO, International Organisation or Multilateral Agency.

  3. Experience in operation and maintenance of water supply, treatment and distribution equipment.

  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Oral and written Arabic will be an added advantage.

  5. Experience and skills in community mobilization.

  6. Having demonstrated good organizational and interpersonal communication skills;

  7. Organized, efficient, and able to meet deadlines

  8. Proficiency in using computer software e. g MS Windows, MS office programs and internet.

  9. Strong coordination and networking skills.

  10. Ability to work under pressure in unstable security and remote environment is an asset.
