Global Sector Lead, Disaster Management

Job Description

*Preferred locations, Geneva, Switzerland; New York City, New York or Washington,D.C. Position to be located in a jurisdiction (Country or US State) where WVI is registered to operate.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Global Sector Lead, Disaster Management will provide overall leadership and strategy development to our humanitarian works defined above across the partnership, engaging heavily in both internal and external components of this work. This highly influential role will also lead and position World Vision as an effective, efficient, accountable, highly respected Christian relief and disaster management agency and partner responding to communities and children and institutions affected by natural disaster, conflict, man-made disasters and other crisis situations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Setting Humanitarian Emergency Assistance (HEA) Policy, Strategy and Humanitarian Standard:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the partnership by developing Partnership policy, strategy, and humanitarian standards which are aligned to our mission, vision, Partnership strategy, external and global landscaping, and industry standard.

  • Support Global Operations and Programming: Delivering effective and efficient ministry support to global operations by deploying capable and agile global response team. Lead and monitor global disaster response portfolio and reports on WV’s contributions at a global level to WVI executive leadership and Board.

Building HEA Global Capability:

  • Provide strategic capacity investment recommendations to executives ensuring HEA global capability is being built in every entity across the Partnership based on global strategy and disaster risks, including managing HEA global networks and Community of Practice.

Ensure Ministry & Sector Integration and Innovation:

  • Lead and facilitate ministry and sector integration and innovation to align with the Partnership strategy, and ensure continuous learning and innovation on ministry and operating models.

Collaborate and Partnering for Impact:

  • Represent WV to a range of external entities (other INGOs, UN agencies, corporates, etc.) and international humanitarian forum and networks for impact, learning, influence and resources.

Support and Manage Resources Development:

  • Work closely with Global Resource Development, Grant Acquisition Management teams and fund-raising offices (Support Offices) for positioning WV well before donor community and to raise funding for disasters. This position also provides strategy guidance for food resources acquisition, management and programming; and manage relationship at global level with WFP and other donors.

KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in international studies or relevant field.

  • A minimum of 10 years leadership and operational experience in international relief and development activities; at least three (3) years disaster response experience is a must.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the growing complexities of disaster issues and activities facing the humanitarian sector.

  • Successful track record of functioning effectively at senior levels across large and complex multinational organizations (C-suite level).

  • Proven ability to be a risk taker – ability to make timely tough decisions, including initiating responses based on incomplete and sometimes contradictory data.

  • Exceptional relational, negotiating and cross cultural skills that develop trust and enable achievement of job objective, both internally and externally.

  • Capacity to act as a servant leader, strong faith in Christ, with the ability to demonstrate this faith through motives and actions in all contexts of humanitarian disasters.

  • A humanitarian leader who is passionate about World Vision’s mission, values and vision, and who is driven to work for the poor, marginalized and vulnerable, and who can enthuse the organization with confidence, energy and vision.

  • Experience working in a matrix reporting environment.

  • Management of large scale change initiative.

  • Effective written and verbal communications and presentation skills in English.

  • Secondary language in French, Spanish, Portuguese a plus.

Preferred:

  • Tertiary qualifications in business management.

Work Environment:

  • The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 40% of the time.
