Training Specialist - Loan Officer Recruitment & Orientation

As the Training Specialist - Loan Officer Recruitment and Orientation (LORO), you will manage the implementation of a standardized method for sourcing, assessing, training, hiring and orienting Loan Officers. With your understanding of microfinance operations, you will work with individuals in Microfinance Institutions (MFI) and in VisionFund Global Centre to identify opportunities to improve the performance of MFIs through the LORO established training modules. You will organise and facilitate train-the-trainer events and deliver training for staff in MFIs. By doing so, you will help lower the rate of turnover among loan officers, and improve their portfolio performance. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled project manager with proven experience of facilitating training modules covering material that ranges from the highly technical to generic skills and orientation material that captures World Vision/VisionFund’s Christian identity and ethos. Highly-developed facilitation and influencing skills will be essential, as well as a strong track record of training, consulting, facilitation, supporting and leading change, influencing, and project



  • Organises and directs the implementation of LORO in individual MFIs.

  • Guides MFI Operations and P&C teams to translate strategic goals into practical recruitment, orientation and training plans.

  • Organises and facilitates LORO implementation workshops with MFI senior managers.

  • Amends or oversees the amendment of the LORO manual for individual MFIs according to contextual need.

  • Maintains a master version of LORO, incorporating lessons learned in MFIs to constantly refine master version.

  • Shares all lessons learned from LORO implementations with all MFIs.

  • Produces a regular LORO dashboard for VFI senior managers to understand progress and impact of LORO in individual MFIs and globally.

  • Maintains regular contact with all MFIs that have implemented LORO to ensure the principles are not watered down or compromised over time.

  • Maintains a network of LORO ‘champions’ in the MFIs to assist in maintaining the high quality of the sourcing, recruitment, orientation and training.

  • Identifies the need for new training modules for MFI loan officers.

  • Conducts research outside VFI to identify training material that meets VFI’s needs.

  • Works directly with MFI senior managers to design and plan training events.

  • Consults MFI senior managers and subject matter experts throughout VFI in the process of creating specific, targeted training materials, based on established VFI models.

  • Organises, delivers and facilitates train-the-trainer events and training for staff in MFIs. Maintains records of qualified trainers in MFIs and conducts refresher train-the-trainer sessions as necessary.

  • Work with MFIs to pilot new training material.


  • Knowledge of learning and development/training/adult learning best practice and theories, including in relation to different cultures, and demonstrated ability to put theories into practice in varied contexts.

  • Knowledge of the microfinance industry operational best-practices, and ideally knowledge of VFI’s operations or the operations of a similar microfinance network.

  • Bachelor's degree. Critical thinking abilities and mathematical and analytical abilities are needed at degree level for example for the analysis of results of LORO.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train in both formal and informal settings (at least five years of experience).

  • Highly effective facilitation skills, suitable for training and running workshops for both senior managers and MFI field staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop practical recruitment and training plans based on strategic aims.

  • Demonstrated skill at explaining new and complex concepts effectively.

  • Demonstrated skill and understanding in cross cultural situations and values diversity; Demonstrated skill in managing groups in many different cultures, able to alter behaviour and language appropriate to the context.

  • Demonstrates commitment to the values of the organisation and its Christian identity and foundations. Ability to embed a Christ-centered approach into training, in a way that is sensitive to the diversity of cultures and faith backgrounds among MFI staff.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, keeping in contact with colleagues and reliably meeting deadlines.

  • Proven consultancy skills, focused on achieving specific outcomes in a wide variety of contexts.

  • Fluency in English and high level of effectiveness in written and verbal communication in English – and excellent skills at communicating with groups for whom English is not a first or fluent language.

  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time.


  • Previous microfinance experience including in an international context.

  • Recruitment experience (ideally in a variety of developing countries).

  • Graduate degree in education, economic devleopment, or related field.

  • Proficiency with Lotus Notes, Excel, Word, and MS Project is desirable.

  • Skilled in project management.

  • Fluency in other languages (particularly French and Spanish) is a plus.

  • Knowledge and/or qualification related to recruitment / staff engagement / HR / OD.

Work Environment:

  • As part of the Operations team, this position works closely with the VFI Training Manager to create and deliver training modules for other VisionFund staff around the globe. The Training Specialist will work with individuals in MFIs and in VFI’s Global Centre to identify opportunities to improve the performance of MFIs through established LORO training modules, and through the creation of new modules as needs arise. The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time, to MFIs in over thirty developing countries, where branches are generally in rural locations.
